Japanese Food 101

What is Omakase?
A multi-course dining experience where the chef selects each dish for you. 'Omakase' literally means 'I'll leave it to you' — trust the chef to serve the best of the day's ingredients.
Sushi vs Sashimi — What's the Difference?
Sushi always includes vinegared rice topped or wrapped with fish, vegetables, or egg. Sashimi is thinly sliced raw fish served on its own, without rice.
Izakaya Etiquette
Order drinks first, share small plates with the table, and don't be afraid to call staff with 'Sumimasen!' (Excuse me). Most izakayas are casual — think of them as Japanese gastropubs.
Is Japanese Food Halal?
Not by default — traditional Japanese cooking often uses mirin (rice wine), pork-based broth, or sake. However, Singapore has a growing number of halal-certified and halal-friendly Japanese restaurants.
