About Izakaya Naniwa
Izakaya Naniwa: hidden on Cuppage 3F. Shoes off, tatami. Chef Okamoto's daily Kyoto obanzai — home-cooked food displayed on the counter. Changes every day. Simple, seasonal, honest.
The 'adults only' rule reflects authentic izakaya tradition — drinking is central. 3 glasses/hour or S$25++ cover. No time limit. The atmosphere: intimate, slightly messy, completely authentic — a Japanese evening in good company.
Menu handwritten in Japanese, no English — intentional. Chef Okamoto's wife guides you. Beyond obanzai: sashimi, tempura, yakitori, okonomiyaki. Sake, beer, shochu, whisky. Décor: nostalgic, homesick-inducing for Japanese customers. For non-Japanese: a window into the real Japan.

Finding the Hidden Door
3F Cuppage, corner #03-13. No English sign. Push through. Remove shoes. Step onto tatami. You've arrived in a different country.
The Counter: Choose Your Obanzai
Counter lined with today's obanzai — a dozen+ dishes. Point at what interests you. From S$3++. Kyoto grandmother cooking. Between plates, drink. Sake, beer, shochu. You're not here to rush.
The Izakaya Classics
Beyond obanzai: sashimi (seasonal, excellent), tempura, yakitori, okonomiyaki. Not fancy, not for Instagram — just trying to taste good, and succeeding completely. Salaryman food on tatami with sake.
Midnight: The Last Sake
No time limit. Hours pass. Sake flows. Nearly midnight. Chef Okamoto still behind the counter. You put shoes back on, walk down the stairs. Outside: bright, noisy Orchard Road. But for the last few hours, you were in Osaka.
Editor's Note
Naniwa is Singapore's most authentic izakaya — and not for everyone. The alcohol rule, Japanese-only menu, tatami, and hidden location filter for genuine enthusiasts. If that's you: extraordinary. Obanzai from S$3++, Tabelog-listed, unreplicable atmosphere. Caveats: 3-glass rule enforced. Tatami uncomfortable for some. No English menu. Very small. Cuppage 3F can feel uncomfortable. But for those who find #03-13: the feeling of being a regular at a neighbourhood izakaya in Japan — something no amount of money buys at fancier restaurants.
