About

Opened 2003 — one of Singapore's first authentic yakitori. Still one of the best because of 20+ years of consistency. The aged tare sauce is a living condiment no technique can shortcut.

160 items total, 70+ kushiyaki types. Foie gras skewer is the most famous. Kaki buta maki (oyster-pork) is the signature. Plus sashimi, fried dishes, seasonal specials.

60 sake labels curated for sumiyaki pairing. Includes rare fuguzake. Staff guide you through. Natural izakaya rhythm: edamame → skewers → onigiri → final glass.

Robertson Quay has transformed since 2003 — Shunjuu has been here through every stage. Japanese expatriates keep coming back for 20 years because the sumiyaki is patient, traditional, and built on decades of accumulated expertise.

Binchotan — Japanese white charcoal fired at 1,000°C+. Burns for hours with no smoke. Natural flavours shine. The grill is Shunjuu's centre — not background cooking, but the main performance.

Lunch Chirashi Don (S$25) — one of Robertson Quay's best-value options. Weekday riverside lunch with sake and chirashi is one of Singapore's most pleasant midday escapes.

Your Dining Journey

01

Walk Along the River

Robertson Quay is the quieter sibling of Clarke Quay. Shunjuu has direct river views. Walk the promenade first. Request riverside seating when booking.

02

Start with Sake & Edamame

Don't rush to the grill menu. Start with cold sake (ask staff for a pairing), complimentary cabbage, edamame, and seasonal sashimi.

03

The Skewer Parade

Order skewers in rounds of 3-4. Start with Foie Gras (signature), then Kaki Buta Maki, Tontoro, Tebasaki. Adventurous: chicken heart + cartilage. Keep ordering — this is izakaya.

04

Finish with Onigiri & One Last Glass

Grilled onigiri to finish, one last sake, deep-fried brie if you have room. Step out to the riverside — Robertson Quay is most atmospheric after dark.

Editor's Note

What to know before you go

Rewards repeat visits. Start with Foie Gras, Kaki Buta Maki, Tebasaki. Ask staff for sake pairing. Riverside seats — book specifically. Lunch Chirashi Don S$25 is hidden value. If you visit one izakaya in Singapore, make it Shunjuu.
