Sun With Moon Light
Why It Stands Out
About
Casual concept from Sun With Moon Wheelock Place (est. 2005). JEM opened early 2024. Streamlined menu focused on kamameshi as the hero, plus chirashi, sushi rolls, bento.
Kamameshi is the star. Iron pot, short-grain rice in bonito-kelp dashi. Rice absorbs all the umami. Toppings layered on top. The iron pot creates okoge (crispy rice) at the bottom — prized in Japanese cooking.
Beyond kamameshi: chirashi bowls, signature sushi rolls, 7-course Okemori Komachi Bento. Restaurant is bright and airy on JEM L4 with window views. Calmer than lower floors.

The Kamameshi Experience
Iron Pot Arrives
Iron pot arrives steaming. Wooden lid sealed. Rice still cooking in bonito-kelp dashi. Hourglass placed beside. Don't open yet.
Wait for the Sand
~1 minute. Not just theatre: ensures perfect rice texture and flavour infusion. A zen moment in fast-paced Singapore.
Reveal
Sand done → lift lid. Aromatic steam bursts. Mix toppings into rice gently. Serve yourself with wooden scoop.
Okoge — Crispy Rice
Scrape the bottom — find okoge: thin, crispy, toasty rice. Not burnt — deliberately created. Nutty crunch. Arguably the best part.

Understanding Kamameshi
🍚 Kamameshi 釜飯
Kamameshi = 'kettle rice' from the Edo period. Iron pot distributes heat evenly, creates okoge. Dashi infuses every grain. Nostalgic comfort food in Japan. Now in Jurong with the hourglass ritual.
Editor's Note
Fills a unique niche — kamameshi exists nowhere else in Jurong. Iron-pot dashi rice is a different experience. Aburi Kaisen Bara is the star. Strong lunch value. Caveats: some inconsistency vs Wheelock, portions can feel modest, quiet L4 location, doesn't travel well for delivery. A genuine recommendation for those beyond sushi-ramen-curry. Come for kamameshi, stay for the okoge.
