About Fat Cow
Fat Cow is a Japanese-inspired wagyu steakhouse that has been a fixture of the Orchard dining scene since 2011. Located in the somewhat unexpected setting of Camden Medical Centre on Orchard Boulevard, the restaurant is a dedicated temple to premium Wagyu beef — offering cuts from Japan's most prestigious prefectures including Saga, Iwate, Ohmi, Kobe, and Miyazaki, alongside Australian and American wagyu for those seeking different price points.
The name 'Fat Cow' is a deliberate play on words — 'Fat' represents luxury and indulgence, while in Mandarin dialect 'Fatt' (发) means prosperity. The restaurant interior follows a contemporary wabi-sabi aesthetic: ceramic walls, a ceiling of intricate latticework, and wood-imprinted menus create an environment that is minimalist yet warm. An open kitchen with 8 counter seats allows guests to watch the chefs work, while the main dining hall accommodates larger parties.
What sets Fat Cow apart from other wagyu restaurants is its range of preparation methods. Guests can choose their preferred cut, weight, and grade of wagyu, then have it prepared as Sumibiyaki (charcoal-grilled), Shabu-shabu (hot pot), Sukiyaki (sweet soy broth), or Hobayaki (grilled on a magnolia leaf). The restaurant also operates Shiki Omakase — a 13-course seasonal sushi omakase at S$88++ that features otoro, A5 Miyazaki wagyu, uni, and foie gras, making it one of the best value premium sushi experiences in Orchard.

Finding the Hidden Gem
Camden Medical Centre is not where you'd expect to find one of Singapore's best wagyu restaurants. Walk past the medical offices, find the ground floor entrance, and step inside. The wabi-sabi interior — ceramic walls, a latticework ceiling, warm wood tones — immediately signals that this is something special. The open kitchen counter seats 8, offering a front-row view. The main dining hall is more spacious, with separate rooms for groups.
Choosing Your Wagyu
Fat Cow lets you customise your beef experience in a way few restaurants do. Select your preferred grade (A3 for leaner meat with subtle sweetness, or A5 for maximum marbling and umami), your cut, and your weight. Then choose your preparation: Sumibiyaki (charcoal grill) for purists who want the char and smoke, Shabu-shabu for the interactive hot-pot experience, Sukiyaki for sweet-soy richness, or Hobayaki for an aromatic magnolia-leaf grill. The staff are knowledgeable and will guide you based on your preferences and appetite.
The Wagyu Moment
The first bite of properly grilled A5 wagyu at Fat Cow is unforgettable. The fat renders on the charcoal, the exterior develops a light crust, and the interior is so tender it barely requires chewing. The beef is served with sea salt, ponzu ginger, and a special yuzu pepper sauce — three accompaniments that each bring out different aspects of the wagyu's character. If you've opted for Shabu-shabu, watching the marbled slices turn from deep red to pale pink in the broth is its own kind of theatre.
The Donburi Finale
Many regulars finish with the Fat Cow Premium Donburi — wagyu on truffle-scented rice, topped with foie gras, caviar, uni, and an onsen egg. It is unapologetically indulgent and designed to be the meal's crescendo. The Shiki Omakase option follows a different path — 13 courses of seasonal sushi culminating in a wagyu handroll with uni and Kagoshima A5 beef. Either way, you leave Fat Cow with the satisfying weight of exceptional beef and the lingering richness that only real wagyu delivers.
Drinks & Departure
Fat Cow takes its beverage programme seriously — vintage wines, premium sake, shochu, and signature cocktails are all part of the experience. The sake selection pairs particularly well with the lighter wagyu preparations, while a bold red wine suits the charcoal-grilled cuts. After the meal, you step back out into the quiet of Orchard Boulevard — a world away from the main shopping strip, carrying the memory of Singapore's most dedicated wagyu experience.
Editor's Note
Fat Cow is the best dedicated wagyu restaurant in Orchard. The S$88 Shiki Omakase is genuinely remarkable value — 13 courses with otoro, wagyu, and uni at that price is hard to beat anywhere in Singapore. The lunch donburi sets offer an accessible entry point. That said, we must be honest about recent criticisms. Several 2024-2025 reviews note declining service quality — chefs chatting among themselves rather than engaging guests, inconsistent seating arrangements for omakase diners (some are placed far from the counter), and a sense that the restaurant is coasting on its reputation. The Fat Cow Wagyu Sandwich has received mixed reviews (the bread quality doesn't always match the beef). The 'enhanced menu' add-ons have been described as poor value by some diners. The location inside a medical centre remains quirky — some find it charming, others find it off-putting. Parking is paid and can be expensive for a long dinner. For the core wagyu experience — choosing your cut, grade, and preparation — Fat Cow remains unmatched in Orchard. Just go in with clear expectations about what you want, and don't be afraid to ask the staff for guidance on the best value options.
