About Koji Sushi Bar

Named after koji (糀) — the mould culture essential for brewing sake, shochu, soy sauce, and miso — Koji Sushi Bar positions itself as the 'culture and essence' of Japanese food and drink. The concept is elegantly simple: quality fresh seafood, served quickly and affordably during the day, with a more considered omakase experience in the evening.

What sets Koji apart in Singapore's crowded sushi landscape is its uncompromising approach to value: every piece of nigiri features an oversized slice of fish atop deliberately undersized sushi rice, ensuring each bite delivers maximum flavour. The rice itself is Japanese-produced, prepared with charcoal-filtered water — a detail most restaurants at this price point simply skip.

The Pickering Street location opened first and remains the more intimate of the two, with counter seats inside and high tables outdoors. The newer Raffles City branch offers a similar menu in a busier setting. Both locations transform after sundown: the lunchtime speed-sushi joint gives way to a candlelit bar atmosphere, with sake, shochu, and an 8-course omakase that belies its casual daytime identity.

Your Dining Journey

Two experiences in one restaurant — a quick lunch or a leisurely omakase dinner.

01

Lunch Mode — Walk In, Eat Well, Move On

During lunch, Koji operates as a no-fuss sushi joint for the CBD office crowd. Walk in, sit at the counter or a high table, and order a nigiri set or the signature Chirashi Don. Food arrives fast. The sushi rice is properly vinegared and the fish portions are generous for the price. In and out in 30–45 minutes.

02

Dinner Mode — Omakase Transformation

The evening omakase (S$178++) is a curated 8-course journey: seasonal appetisers, sashimi, teppan-grilled items, a soup-based dish, nigiri, and dessert. The chef selects the finest seasonal ingredients available that day. This is a different experience entirely — slower, more considered, and paired with sake or shochu from a well-chosen list. Advance reservation required.

03

The Signature — Chirashi Don

If you visit only once, order the Chirashi Don (S$22++). Generous chunks of salmon, swordfish, tuna, yellowtail, and seasonal fish are arranged over sushi rice, marinated in Koji's special tangy sauce. Served with miso soup and a fresh salad. It is, quite simply, one of the best-value chirashi bowls in the CBD. The mixed grain rice option is also available for those who prefer a healthier base.

Editor's Note

What to know before you go

For lunch, the Pickering Street branch is the better experience — more intimate, with counter seats where you can watch the chef work. Raffles City is convenient but busier and less atmospheric. No reservations needed for lunch at either location; just walk in. For the evening omakase, book at least a few days ahead — it fills up quickly, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. The omakase represents excellent value at S$178++ for 8 courses; comparable experiences elsewhere in the CBD cost S$250–400++. If you are watching your budget, two nigiri sets (Value + any premium set) with a Chirashi Don to share makes a satisfying lunch for two at under S$50 per person. Both locations are closed on Sundays.
