About

Unatoto is a Japanese unagi (freshwater eel) fast-casual chain that has turned a traditionally expensive delicacy into an everyday meal. With over 100 locations across Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Vietnam, the brand's motto is straightforward: 'Affordable, Fast and Tasty'. The eel is grilled over charcoal fire — producing a crispy exterior and tender, aromatic meat — then glazed with a specially brewed honjozo soy sauce.

In Singapore, Unatoto opened its first location at Guoco Tower (Tanjong Pagar) in January 2023, quickly drawing long queues from the CBD lunch crowd. A second location at Novena Square followed. The rice is specifically selected to complement the eel, and the concept delivers genuine unagi quality at a fraction of what you'd pay at a traditional specialist restaurant.

3

Add the Umaki

The Umaki (~S$3) is what almost every table orders. At that price, it's a must-add. Chawanmushi and karaage are also solid.

4

If You Ordered Hitsumabushi...

Divide into quarters. First: plain. Second: add wasabi, shallot, nori. Third: pour dashi broth for ochazuke. Fourth: whichever way you liked best.

Editor's Note

Unatoto has done something genuinely valuable: it made quality unagi accessible to people who don't want to spend S$40–60 at a premium specialist. The charcoal-grilled eel is legit — crispy skin, tender flesh, good tare sauce. At S$14.50 for a Unadon Double, the value proposition is outstanding. The Hitsumabushi is the most interesting item — the three-way eating ritual keeps things engaging to the last bite. The Umaki at S$3 is a no-brainer side order.

Affordable Unagi: How Unatoto Changed the Game

Traditional unagi-ya in Japan and Singapore charge S$30-50+ for a single eel rice bowl — reflecting the genuine cost of quality freshwater eel. Unatoto from Tokyo disrupts this by using efficient operations, a focused menu, and scale to bring real grilled eel to the S$10-20 range. This is not imitation eel or shortcuts — it is genuine unagi, grilled and glazed with tare sauce, served over rice. The quality gap between Unatoto and premium unagi-ya exists, but the price gap is far larger, making Unatoto the clear value choice for everyday eel cravings. For many Singaporeans, Unatoto represents their first experience with real unagi at a price that allows regular visits rather than once-a-year splurges.
