About
Sakae Sushi (栄寿司) is a rare thing in Singapore's Japanese food scene — a homegrown chain that helped make sushi affordable and accessible to everyday diners. Founded by Douglas Foo in September 1997 at the OUB Centre in Raffles Place, Sakae Sushi opened its doors in the middle of the Asian financial crisis with a bold proposition: quality Japanese food at prices ordinary Singaporeans could enjoy regularly, not just on special occasions. The concept — kaiten (conveyor belt) sushi with tablet ordering — was ahead of its time.
At its peak, Sakae Sushi operated over 30 locations across Singapore and expanded internationally to Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Thailand, the Philippines, and even briefly to the Chrysler Building in New York City. Today, Sakae Sushi has consolidated to 2 locations — East Coast Road and the TradeHub 21 (Boon Lay) area — but the core offering remains: over 200 varieties of sushi, sashimi, teppanyaki, tempura, ramen, udon, and donburi, all made with the chain's signature Vitamin E enriched rice.

Your Dining Journey
Arrive & Be Seated
The East Coast Road location accepts reservations via Chope, which is recommended for weekend evenings. Walk-ins are welcome and usually seated quickly.
Pick from the Belt or Order
Watch plates glide past on the conveyor belt and grab whatever catches your eye — plates are colour-coded by price. Use the tablet for specific orders.
Explore the Full Menu
Beyond sushi, Sakae's 200+ item menu is worth exploring. The teishoku value meals are great for a complete lunch. Don't overlook the ramen and donburi options.
Try the Aburi Series
Sakae's aburi (torched) sushi is a highlight — the flame-seared topping adds a smoky sweetness. The mentaiko series is particularly popular.

Editor's Note
Sakae Sushi holds a special place in Singapore's dining history. Before the wave of Japanese chains from Tokyo arrived, this was the restaurant that proved sushi could be an everyday meal — not a luxury reserved for special occasions. The chain has shrunk dramatically from its 30+ location heyday, and there's no getting around that. But if you're near East Coast Road or Boon Lay and want a reliable, no-fuss Japanese meal at fair prices, the two remaining locations still deliver. The Vitamin E rice is a genuine differentiator, the menu breadth is impressive for the price point, and the tablet-plus-conveyor-belt system keeps things fun for families with kids. It's honest, accessible Japanese food from a brand that helped shape Singapore's palate.
