About

Ramen Kiou is an Osaka-born ramen chain established in 1995, known for serving honest, time-honoured goodness. The 'Taste of Kiou' is a harmony of three elements: broth, chashu, and noodles.

In Singapore, managed by RE&S Group. All 3 locations sit within &JOY Dining Halls at NEX, Jurong Point, and Great World. The tonkotsu broth is pressure-cooked 5+ hours, chashu braised 3+ hours, and noodles are freshly-made Kyushu-style.

Your Dining Journey

1

Find the &JOY Dining Hall

Located inside &JOY Japanese Food Streets at NEX, Jurong Point, and Great World (all B1). Order at the counter, take a number, sit in shared seating.

2

Order the Riki

The Riki Tonkotsu is the best seller — rich, creamy 5-hour broth with double chashu braised 3 hours. For lighter, try the Shoyu Tonkotsu.

3

Add Mentai Mayo Gyoza

Regular gyoza is decent, but the Mentai Mayo upgrade is what regulars order. Rich mentaiko cream sauce with crispy dumplings. Worth the add-on.

4

Check Seasonal Specials

Ramen Kiou collaborates with Kuriya for seasonal specials — Hokkaido Scallop, A4 Wagyu, Green Chilli, and Sansho editions. Limited-time, worth seeking out.

5

Explore &JOY

Browse other Japanese stalls in the &JOY Dining Hall — sushi, donburi, desserts, and more. Great for group dining with variety.

Editor's Note

Ramen Kiou quietly does its job very well. The 3-hour braised chashu is genuinely impressive. The pressure-cooked broth has depth without muddy heaviness. The &JOY format isn't a sit-down restaurant, but the ramen punches above that setting. Seasonal specials are worth tracking. Solid value at ~S$16.

How to Visit

Most outlets are located in major shopping malls across Singapore, easily accessible by MRT. No reservations are needed — simply walk in. During peak lunch hours (12:00–1:30pm) and dinner hours (6:00–7:30pm), expect short waiting times at popular outlets.

Understanding the Cuisine

Japanese cuisine is built on core principles that elevate even the simplest dishes. Umami — the fifth taste — is central. Balance is everything. Presentation matters. Seasonality drives the menu.

Kyoto-Style Ramen: The Soy Sauce Tradition

Most ramen in Singapore defaults to Hakata-style tonkotsu — creamy, white, pork-bone-forward. Ramen Kiou offers something different: Kyoto-style ramen, where the broth combines rich pork bone stock with a prominent soy sauce tare (seasoning base). The result is a darker, more amber-coloured soup with layers of savoury depth that tonkotsu alone cannot achieve. Kyoto-style ramen has a longer history than Hakata-style — soy sauce ramen predates the tonkotsu boom — and carries a more refined, complex flavour profile. The soy tare adds umami, a slight sweetness, and an aromatic quality that rounds out the richness of the pork bone base. For diners experiencing palate fatigue from yet another creamy white tonkotsu, Ramen Kiou's Kyoto approach feels genuinely fresh — the same comforting warmth and richness, but expressed through a different lens.

Ordering Tips for First-Timers

Start with the signature dish — it is the item the kitchen has perfected and the reason the chain built its reputation. If dining with friends, order a variety to share and discover favourites together. Lunch sets typically offer 20-30% better value than à la carte ordering. Follow the restaurant's social media for seasonal promotions and limited-time specials. Most outlets accept walk-ins only, so arriving at 11:30am or after 1:30pm avoids the worst lunch queues.

Beyond Tonkotsu: Discovering Soy-Based Ramen

If you have only ever eaten tonkotsu ramen in Singapore, your understanding of what ramen can be is incomplete. Soy-based ramen represents a different philosophy of ramen-making.
