The MOS Story

Founded 12 March 1972 Tokyo. MOS = Mountain, Ocean, Sun. Japan's #2 after McDonald's. ~1,300 outlets in Japan. Expanded across Asia.

Every burger fresh-to-order (not warming rack). Vegetables hand-prepared daily. More veggies than typical fast food. 3-5 min wait but noticeably better quality.

Rice Burger invented 1987 — compressed grilled rice patties replacing bread. Revolutionary. Yakiniku Rice Burger = most iconic. Also: Ebi, Kakiage, Tsukune, seasonal Unagi.

Editor's Note

Editor's Note

49 outlets = most ubiquitous Japanese brand in SG. Rice Burgers are unique. Corn Soup is underrated. Some quality decline noted by long-time fans. More expensive than McDonald's. But fresh-to-order + Rice Burger = still a cut above.

Japanese Burger Culture

Japan adapted the burger with Japanese quality philosophy. MOS founded 1972 as the anti-McDonald's. Rice Burger 1987 = uniquely Japanese innovation. Not Western food modified, but Japanese food in burger format.

Experience

Smaller, cleaner than typical fast food. Wait 3-5 min for fresh assembly. Rice Burger texture surprises — firm, chewy, slightly crispy. Hokkaido Corn Soup = one of the best fast food sides in SG. Don't skip it.

MOS vs McDonald's

McDonald's = speed + scale + price. MOS = quality + freshness + uniqueness. MOS costs 20-30% more but delivers noticeably fresher food. Rice Burger = something McDonald's never replicated.

MOS SG: no pork/lard but NOT halal certified. Some Muslims choose to eat here personally. McDonald's SG is halal certified. Important distinction.

Tips

First visit: Yakiniku Rice + Corn Soup + drink (~S$11). Second: MOS Burger or Teriyaki Chicken. Seasonal items = most creative. Delivery: Rice Burgers eat within 20 min.
