About Gyusei Gyukatsu

Gyusei Gyukatsu opened in September 2025 with a genuinely rare proposition: halal-certified A5 wagyu gyukatsu. While gyukatsu has become popular through Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu at Raffles City, finding a halal version with premium Japanese wagyu was essentially impossible until now.

The restaurant uses Nishi Awa beef from Tokushima Prefecture — from Japan's first halal-dedicated slaughterhouse. The beef goes through a four-step process: sous-vide bath, charcoal smoke, deep-frying in light panko, then served with a personal hot stone grill.

The intimate space seats only 20-30 guests. Each set comes with 12 dipping sauces including freshly grated wasabi — a detail that costs more than most diners realise. Operated by TK Group (Tomahawk King, Charr'd).

Sides & Extras

💡 The A5 Ribeye (S$69) is the star. The 12 dipping sauces are the differentiator. The XL Hyogo Oysters (S$29) are excellent.

Your Dining Journey

01

The 12 Sauces Arrive First

Before the gyukatsu arrives, 12 sauces are arranged — a visual feast. Start with salt, work your way through. Each reveals a different facet of the beef.

02

Grill to Your Preference

The gyukatsu arrives rare inside — you finish it on the personal hot stone grill. About 5 seconds per side for medium-rare. The interactive element is what makes gyukatsu special.

03

The Oyster Side Quest

The XL Hyogo Oysters (S$29/3) are an unexpected highlight — genuinely large, plump, creamy. Several reviewers called them the best restaurant oysters in Singapore.

04

Pace Your 90 Minutes

The 90-minute limit is enforced. Order everything at the start. Most diners finish in 60-70 minutes.

05

Walk Through Kampong Gelam After

The location puts you steps from Kampong Gelam. Walk Haji Lane and Arab Street after. During Ramadan, the bazaar is right at the doorstep.

Editor's Note

What to know before you go

The halal certification is the headline, but Gyusei stands on its own merits. Honest notes: the Menchikatsu was tough — stick to the whole-cut gyukatsu. S$60-80/person with sides. For halal diners, this is genuinely groundbreaking.
